INTRODUCTION
My name is Ahwan Regmi from Mangalbare, Ilam, Nepal. Nepal is one of the most popular tourist sites in the world. The tourist site is also known as the sunrise and tea garden. I am a 25-years old, the second born in a family of five. My two parents and siblings live in Nepal. I went to primary and high school in Nepal. My father works as a casual laborer who works with a road construction company. My mother is a stay-at-home mum who takes care of my younger siblings. The annual income of my parents in Nepal is NPR 316,013. I came to Australia through government sponsorship. I receive funding from non-governmental educational organization to pay for my upkeep. The funding from the organization was renewed last year when I completed my master’s program and my parents can only support part of my upkeep.
ACADEMIC BACKGROUND
I completed my high school education in Suryodaya Shiksha Sadan Higher Secondary School in Mangalbare, Ilam, Nepal. I graduated in June 2011 and attained 62.63%. I started pursuing a course in hospitality management after completing +2. I completed a major in hospitality management and attained 58.60 percent under the Higher Secondary Education Board (HSEB). I went to Kathmandu Unified City Higher Secondary School located at Chabahil in 2013. My reason for choosing the hospitality course was due to my passion for cooking, serving the family, and preparing different meals. I realized that hospitality and tourism are an interconnected field that can increase my chances of securing a bright future. Tourism is one of the booming industries in Nepal. The industry is generating multiple job opportunities and contributing to a large percent of the country’s revenue. When I realized the opportunity, I enrolled for a Bachelor of Arts in Hotel Management (BAHM) from Indian Hotel Academy. The learning institution is located in Delhi, affiliated with Mahatma Gandhi University, India. In December 2016, I graduated with a bachelor’s degree with 60.54 percent.
GAP REASONS
I returned home after completing the degree. While getting the transcripts from the institution takes six months, I was privileged to acquire the transcripts on 12th March 2018. It took a long time to acquire the transcripts due to the misunderstandings about the fee balance with the finance department. During the time of waiting for the transcripts, I applied and secured a job as a Food and Beverage captain in Hotel Hardik. The hotel is one of the renowned hotels in Kathmandu, Nepal. I worked as a Food and Beverage captain for one year and four months until 19th June 2017. I had a passion to study abroad and thus I started applying and doing tests. I completed an IELTS test in 2017. The late collection of the graduation documents led to the late application for study opportunities abroad.
REASONS FOR SELECTING AUSTRALIA
One of the reasons for selecting Australia as a preferred country for the study is the favourable climate. Nepal has a moderate climate throughout the year. I find an identical climate in Sydney. Another reason for selecting Australia is cultural diversity since the country has several ethnic groups, similar to Nepal. Studies show that Nepal and Australia enjoy cultural diversity. For example, Australia has different ethnic groups and religious groups of people from across the world. The diverse cultural value is important in learning the creative approaches to painting and decorating.
Identity and security are important factors in the selection of Australia. Foreign students consider security and safety as important elements while living in another country. I have learned through research that the Australian government is committed to ensuring the citizens, foreigners, and students. The teaching pedagogy is another reason for choosing Australia. The institution provides an affordable tuition fee compared to other learning institutions across the globe. I am confident that the learning resources in Australia are sufficient to boost my knowledge and experience in painting and decorating.
REASONS AGAINST THE USA
Several students prefer the USA as a destination for their studies. Although the country has an established history of training world-class students, the security and welfare of students is a major hindrance. Gun laws and terror activities have been diminishing the security of international students. News on global television companies such as CNN on gun shooting in learning institutions makes the US a less preferable choice for higher education. The latest incidence is the Capitol attack by extremists who wanted to block president-elect Joe Biden. Other factors include natural disasters such as sea typhoons, hurricanes, and flooding. Another reason is that the institutions subject the students to several tests such as GRE, GMAT, and TOEFL. The tests take time and lead to an expensive pursuit. The rate of acquiring a visa from countries such as Nepal is slow since people are subjected to various tests.
WHY NOT UNITED KINGDOM?
The education system and lifestyle in the United Kingdom are expensive. One of the considerations while selecting a country where I can advance my studies is the tuition fee and the cost of living. Several students are engaged in mass fraud and cheating that affects the reputation of international students. The peaceful and assuring environment in Australia is incomparable to Australia.
WHY NOT CANADA?
Canada is an emerging destination for learners from across the world. The country’s learning institutions provide quality learning. One of the challenges, why I did not select the country, is due to the cold weather. It would be difficult for me to get used to the cold weather since Nepal has a warm climate.
WHY NOT NEPAL OR MGU
Nepal does not have institutions of higher learning offering courses in painting and decorations. The few available institutions such as Kathmandu University and Pokhara University offer limited slots. The available courses in the painting do not offer world-class technologies and innovations that the world requires today. Some of the challenges include unrevised course outlines and teacher-centered education, unlike job market-oriented courses. The courses emphasize theory as compared to practical lessons. Another challenge is that lack of adequate staff results in poor training and shallow coaching. Nepal’s education system has the challenge of an uncertain examination schedule. I realized that if I study in Nepal I will end up with a certificate but limited skills to apply in the real world. Nepalese is incomparable with the Australian education system due to the alumni in both countries who bear clear distinctions. For example, students from Nepalese institutions struggle to find jobs, unlike the Australian students.
I did not prefer to complete my course in painting and decorating from Mahatma Gandhi University. Although I did my bachelor’s degree in MGU, I learned that Australia provides a world-class standard compared to MGU. For example, some of the degrees are not globally recognized. I choose Australia since it has a better ranking from the high quality of education.
STUDY MOTIVES
Painting and decorating is a unique course both in Nepal and Australia. Although people thinking about painting and decorating is a low-class career, I aspire to become a painter who will change people’s perspectives. I desire to excel in the field and become a world-class painter. Since childhood, I have been aspiring to become a painter and serve others. After completing my course in hospitality, I realized that it is my time to explore my passion for painting and decorating. Both hospitality and decorating are tasks that involve creativity. Painters or decorators have an interesting career since their work involves doing something new every day. Another reason for choosing the course is that it provides meaningful interactions with other people. I appreciate interacting with other people such as clients and meeting their needs. Painting and decoration is a job that provides an opportunity to start your enterprise. For example, due to the few people who have done the course in Nepal, I aspire to open a company of painting and decorating. Another reason is allowing the painters and decorators an opportunity to travel to different places and scenarios to complete their tasks.

The community engagement will help other students with aspirations of pursuing a painting and decorating career.
