Jay Robert Inslee is the 23rd governor of Washington state and has retained the position since 2013. Apart from being a governor, he is a lawyer, author, environmentalist and is running for the re-election in the upcoming scheduled on August 2020.Jay Inslee was born in 1951 in Seattle Washington He Was raised in this area by his mother Adele, who worked at Sears & Roebuck as a sales clerk and his father, Frank who was a high school teacher and a coach (“About Jay | Governor Jay Inslee”). Jay graduated with a B.A. in economics in 1972 from University of Washington and in 1976 he graduated from Willamette University with his law degree.
After graduating from Willamette University, Jay worked as a city prosecutor and private attorney from 1976 to 1984 in Selah, Washington. He later took part in local politics in 1985 and after two years he got elected to the Washington State House of Representative where he served from 1988 to 1992 as the 14th Legislative District. In 1992 he was elected to the United State House of Representative where he served from 1993 to 1995 for 4th Congressional District of Washington. In 1996 he tried to run for gubernatorial seat but was defeated. From 1997 to 1998 he served as a regional director for United State Department of Health and Human Services. In 1998, he was elected to the United State House of representative and served from 1999 to 2012 for 1st Congressional District of Washington. In 2012, he was elected as a governor of Washington and got re-elected in 2016 (Lizzie). Jay is currently afflicted with Democratic Party.
According to his interview with Judy Woodruff, he prefers a tax system that is fair to the workers and therefore proposing a capital gains tax in Washington to end inequality (Woodruff). On the health issue, he aims to implementing a more affordable and easily accessible health in his state, reducing childhood obesity by supporting children to do regular diet, eat health and embrace outdoors school. He is also into reduction of substance use among the youths through implementation of various rules such as 21 years to be the minimum age for tobacco use among the youths. He also requested HB 1388 to be passed to support integrating behavioral and physical health services. He also gave an executive order with the initiative meant to reduce firearm fatalities as well as with a plan to reduce suicide. He has also introduced a long-term health care program targeting the old people (“Health Care & Human Services”). According to “OnTheIssues” website, the governor proposed college tuition fee to be reduced and the accessibility to financial aid among the students that are in need to be increased by 20% to 30%. He has also launches the transformative Career Connect Washington initiative to help student easily access jobs through apprenticeships and other chances that are career connected. He has also introduced all-day kindergarten learning and invested a lot of money in K-12 learning to afford high quality education (“Jay Inslee On Education”).
