Instructions
1. Search the internet for sources related to the week’s topic (Death in the Ancient World
(Near East and Greece). Your source should provide a scholarly perspective, an artistic
representation, or a subjective, first-person account of a specific religious belief, practice, or
narrative related to death. Possible relevant sources include videos, podcast episodes,
articles, blog posts, etc.
The only stipulation is that the selected sources needs to be freely accessible to your
classmates and the TAs. Thus, you should search for material on free services (e.g., YouTube,
the broader internet) or through the library (e.g., Kanopy, ArtStor, Jstor). Avoid sites that
require external subscriptions (e.g., Netflix, Amazon Prime).
I found this source:
https://australian.museum/learn/cultures/international-collection/ancient-egyptian/the-underworld
-and-the-afterlife-in-ancient-egypt/ that may be useful to write about for the reflection. However,
you must still search for two other sources and explain why you choose whichever source you end
up choosing.
2. Find and review at least three sources.
Note #1: given that the assignment description requires that your selected material be no
more than 15 minutes long (if a video / audio file) or 10 pages (if an article), some of your
“additional sources” could be other sections of the same source. For example, if you review
an entire hour- long documentary, your “three sources” could be three separate sections of
this one film, provided that you are convinced that it is indeed an appropriate source.
3. Select a source and then write up your report based on it. It MUST contain the following
sections:
Note: it is a good idea to employ the headings listed below (“Selection,” “Analysis,”
“Reflection,” “Works Cited / Bibliography”), as this will make it easier for the TAs to ascertain
that your submission is complete.
a. Selection
i. Selected source (including title, author [if known], and URL);
Note: it will not be possible to evaluate your work if you do not include a working link to your chosen
source. Double check the URL before submitting!
ii. A description of all the sources considered AND your rationale for having chosen your
selected source;
iii. Content warning (if necessary).
For instance, if a video relates to the preparation of bodies for burial, it would be thoughtful
to inform viewers of the presence of potentially disturbing imagery ahead of time.
b. Analysis
i. Four separate body paragraphs describing four distinct ways that this source resonated with
course themes or concepts. This section will be graded under the “Contextualization” section of the
rubric. You are invited to draw connections with both theories discussed in class (e.g., approaches to
ritual and narrative) and subject matter (e.g., specific understandings of cosmology, theology,
soteriology). In each of these paragraphs, you should provide a brief overview of the course concept
(complete with relevant citations) and then a discussion of how the selected source helped to
further nuance (and/or complicate) your understanding of this concept.
Note #1: you must support these proposed links with relevant citations of course readings and
lectures. Citations should be in APA or Chicago style.
Note #2: these resonances should be as specific as possible and should not rely on superficial
similarities. As such, it is not sufficient that two cultures both employ burial as a means of disposing
of corpses (for example). Instead, focus on material from the current week (e.g., the lectures /
textbook reading on Hinduism, if you have chosen a documentary on Hindu funerals) OR from
related traditions (e.g., given that Buddhism developed in the context of early (Vedic) Hinduism, it
would be relevant to note similarities / differences here).
c. Reflection
i. At least several sentences describing why you found this particular selection compelling, surprising,
or relevant.
d. Works Cited / Bibliography (as per your chosen style)
