Response to the two statements separately with a minimum of 100 words each. Respond to each statement with whether you agree/disagree and include one quote and reference citation from an attached reading.
Find a newspaper or magazine article that discusses recent nutrition based recommendations. Evaluate the credibility of the article and the research cited. Will you make any of the dietary changes suggested?Statement One:
I searched “interesting nutrition articles” on Google and looked for what seemed to be a reputable website. I found a great article called “Nutritional psychiatry: Your brain on food”. The article was written in 2015 by Eva Selhub MD.
This article was very interesting to me, as I’ve always realized a relationship between my diet and my mood. The article discusses how your daily diet affects the way you feel. It mentions how food has a direct correlation on the structure of your brain. A simple way to break the idea down is mentioned as follows:
“Like an expensive car, your brain functions best when it gets only premium fuel. Unfortunately, just like an expensive car, your brain can be damaged if you ingest anything other than premium fuel. If substances from “low-premium” fuel (such as what you get from processed or refined foods) get to the brain, it has little ability to get rid of them.” (Selhub 2015)
There are many different types of foods that can attribute to putting you in a bad mood/affecting your brain. Some examples are sugars, dairy, grains or processed foods. Everyone is different and will require a different solution to their problems. A suggestion by Dr. Selhab is to spend a few weeks eating a clean diet. After evaluating the changes in how you feel, you can slowly start adding in other foods. This is a great way to pinpoint the problem foods.
The article discussed above seems to come very a very credible source. It is published on Harvard Health Publishing. After researching the author, it was found that Dr. Selhub is on staff at Harvard Medical School and has been published in several medical journals.
I have personally noticed a change in my mood and how I feel based on my diet. This is something that I would definitely like to try on my own in the future. I have recently started working out more and eating a little bit better and I have noticed some change. It would be great to pinpoint exactly what caused problems in the past.Statement two:
I have chosen to do my magazine article on “Do you need a just-for-me-diet? By Caitlin Dow. The article discusses topics covered include thoughts from medicine professor Christopher Gardner on personalized nutrition, statement by Newcastle University Human Nutrition Research Centre. The article gives recommendations on how to wean off the junk food as well as responses from other people as well.
According to the article Ahmed El-Sohemy said We’re giving recommendations to populations, but people want to know what works for them,”. This speak for itself, what works for one person may not works for the other. Majority of the readings from nutrition articles it always goes off the person age, weight, height etc.
Overall, the articles credibility is good. She stated all her supporting material including names & institutions of where these researches originated from.
Note: Statement one response should have a minimum of 100 words and statement two should have 100 word response as well. Both responses should be separate.
