Couple’s Theory:Origins/Background
Couple therapy has evolved in unique phases with the first phase been marriage counseling earlier practiced by service-oriented professionals such as clergy, family life educators, gynecologists, and obstetricians. These particular professionals are today not considered mental health experts even though they were valued to provide strong guidance. The next phase was conjoint therapy, then family therapy, and later marriage counseling and therapy. The refinement of couple therapy has taken a long time and the outcomes have improved over time.
Healthy/Dysfunctional Couple Relationships
Health or dysfunctional couple relationships are terms used to describe relationship patterns between couples and through studying the patterns the relationship can be termed as dysfunctional or healthy. As much as couple therapy is aimed at attempting to resolve, change or improve some aspects of a problematic relationship clinical perspectives of a couple of therapy through studying and analyzing patterns in a relationship might constitute a relationship as either dysfunctional or healthy.
Theory of Change
Couple therapists aim at improving, resolving, or changing aspects of a problematic relationship through a treatment process. The theory of change is that therapists look at different orientations of a relationship and define the core problems of the couple differently. This way the range of the problems is viewed from restrictive relationship narratives, maladaptive ways and skills deficits of relationships as well as the history of the relationship and a clinical perspective to provide a conclusive treatment procedure or interventions for a positive outcome.
Structure of Therapy
The structure of therapy involved the participants and how often and how long the relationship is going to take. Additionally, the therapy might also include children or extended family members, psychotropic medications, individual sessions, multiple therapists, and time limitations.
Role of the Therapist
The role of the therapist is to leverage their individual life experiences, personal values, philosophy, and direct clinical experiences to foster change, resolve, or improve problematic relationships.
Assessment and Treatment Planning Assessment and treatment planning aims at describing the procedures that might be required to understand patterns exhibited by couples through their interaction, symptomatology, and adaptive resources. During assessment and treatment planning some of the procedures could include; conducting a couple’s interviews, studying their relationship with other people and history of their relationship plus individual histories, interpersonal assessments, cultural factors, strengths and weaknesses as a couple, and any mental related problems any or both might have.
Typical Interventions
Typical intervention during couple therapy is done using several therapeutic techniques all aimed at improving, changing, or resolving problematic relationships. These interventions might be informed of behavior change technique which focuses on modifying the behavior of the couple through understanding their partner. Emotionally focused techniques focus on improving an individual’s emotional experience. Multidirectional thinking by the therapist to initiate change.
Mechanisms of Change
Mechanism of change is the curative factors that lead to change in couples as well as assess their relative significance. These mechanisms include providing couples with an insight or understanding for them to change, shifting perceptions while reflecting on the problem reality, learning new interpersonal skills, using a therapeutic approach such as a personality health play, using techniques that compare other relatives as poor fits and most importantly identifying a change in either or both participants.
Gender and Cultural Factors
Aspects of culture and gender have been moved over the years to bring a focus on cultural and gender awareness to a more specific emphasis through offering ways that train researchers and train therapists to separate but also relate cultural and gender factors during the treatment process. Understanding this is helpful to both the therapist and participants as culture influence how they understand the health and healing process and in offering gender-neutral advice to the participants.References
