It could be related to politics, economics and business, sports, movies, video games, art…anything!Choose EITHER systemic violence OR symbolic violence. For example, you could use symbolic violence to analyze a story about JK Rowling’s transphobic remarks. Or, you could use systemic violence to analyze the legal battle between Fortnite and the Apple Store.Close read your article and come up with an argument using the concepts. What is the type of violence in the article? Explain how this is systemic or symbolic violence, and why it is important to us.Second Step: The Oral ExaminationThe presentations will be during class Monday and Wednesday of Week 6. You MUST be ready to present on your day!You have 5 minutes to present. During that time you must:1. State the article’s title and author and where it was published.2. Explain which concepts you are going to use.3. Briefly (1-2 minutes max) summarize the article.4. Analyze the article using the concept (2-3 minutes). You’re going to make an argument, same as with an essay, and come up with two or three supporting reasons.5. Offer a brief conclusion6. The instructor may ask you a question or two. Answer as best you can.As an example of a thesis, you could say, “In this story, JK Rowling’s comments create symbolic violence against transgender women. Here are my supporting reasons…”You may use a few notes, but make eye contact with the audience. Try not to read off the page.
