Sample Outline & Integrating Quotes (MLA)Introduction:Begin the essay by briefly introducing the author, the title of the work followed by a brief overview of the story itself.• The overview or synopsis should not be overly long, focusing on only the most relevant plot details to give the reader a basic understanding of what happens – I’d recommend no more than half a page.The introduction should end with a thesis sentence that puts forth the argument that you will be making in the essay: for example, “Roald Dahl’s story appears to ultimately both endorse and critique the modern feminist movement as we will see through Red’s decision to wear the Wolfskin coat at the end of the story”.Body Paragraph:While it does not have to be in this exact order, this is usually a good time to introduce relevant context from the culture in which the story was written.• Remember you can focus on societal context, historical context, author context – the point of this section is to look at what is happening in that culture and during that time period in which the story was written which helps us to have an idea of what the author may have been trying to critique or respond to in the story.• Do not analyze the story according to our modern society today: for example, Snow White is not about beauty standards in the 2010s or 2020s.• Only include relevant context: if you want to talk about religious persecution in England in the 1600s and how “Red Riding Hood” is a direct response to that issue, don’t include material that doesn’t match up with that overall argument (like including information about the author’s food preferences for example).Body Paragraph:Having introduced relevant societal context in the section above, here is your chance to focus on specific symbols from the story and show how those symbols actually represent and reflect the things you talked about in your context section.• Choose a symbol and then “unpack” it: this means that you analyze it by describing the symbol, discussing how its characterized in the story, etc.  then show how that symbol matches up with a specific person, event, situation from the context that you looked at above.
• For example: I might look at the Wolf (from “Red Riding Hood) and break him down as having an appearance of politeness, having a large appetite, predatorial in nature, and he targets seemingly vulnerable women  I can then connect that symbol and the description/unpacking of it with a specific political party or a specific political candidate in the 1970s or 1980s when Dahl wrote his story.• I would suggest not doing more than 2 symbols in the shorter analysis here simply because the essay is probably too small to do more than that.Body Paragraph:Here you could simply tie everything together that you have been building towards: fully put together the argument that you want to make.• Show how the context you previously mentioned matches with the symbols that you have identified• And don’t forget to discuss here what the author is trying to critique or say about his/her culture through this story.Conclusion:I’d recommend a very brief (1-2 sentences) conclusion where you simply re-state the main idea or argument that you presented in the essay.Source Integration of Quotes (MLA Style)As you continue to work on the Essay #2: Rhetorical Analysis here are some things that you will want to remember when it comes to MLA Formatting for the essay:One of the most important things you can include is correct in-text citations which you will need to include any time that you use a quote in the essay (otherwise you are in danger of direct and intentional plagiarism).
When you use a quotation in the essay be sure to do the following three things:
A) Place the phrase or sentence that you are using from the original source in quotation marks.
B) Include an in-text citation at the end of the quote.
C) The in-text citation should include the author’s last name and the page number.
Example: The author stated, “poverty can be solved simply by the donating of excess funds” (Singer 4).
In the example above you can see A) that I placed the borrowed words or phrase in quotation marks, B) that I included the in-text citation at the end of the quote itself, and C) that I included the author’s last name and page number in the in-text citation. Lastly, note that the period is located after the citation, not before.
