Rhetorical Analysis EssayOverview
The rhetorical analysis essay fulfills two purposes within our course: first to learn how to create an effective argument using ethos, pathos, logos, & kairos and second (perhaps more importantly) to recognize when and how it is being used. The rhetorical triangle is at work around you in virtually every piece of media and interaction you encounter on a daily basis. Rhetoric in and of itself is not inherently good or evil but can be employed in ways you deem moral or amoral – our writing is meant to help you recognize how and where those pieces function. For this assignment, you will select a short video which you plan to evaluate as either effectively or ineffectively using the rhetorical triangle. It is entirely possible that one element may be exceptionally viable in a particular format whereas another struggles, break down how and why one works whereas another fails. Examine its content in terms of where logic is present, if emotion or passion appears, and how credibility is employed. If timing is relevant, also explore the implementation of kairos.Choosing your video is straight forward but should be given careful thought through a variety of factors. First, consider length; you want something which you can view repeatedly in a short timespan and which can be shown to your writing instructor in the first few minutes of your conference. A good rule of thumb is nothing over 10 minutes and shoot for something more like 3-5. Shorter videos can also use rhetoric, like the TikTok videos we showed in class. Make sure you choose something, regardless of length, which provides adequate content for you to discuss all relevant elements of rhetoric which appear and simultaneously enough content to reach 3-5 pages without padding or sources.Your assignment is to establish that the elements that you identify are key, or integral, in the ultimate success or failure of a particular media. Utilize aesthetic elements such as imagery or color, accompanying music, and even narrative structure to discuss. You are not required to use any additional sources in this particular essay as it is designed to give you an opportunity to form and support a position based upon your own interpretation of, and experience with, the art object. If you do come to a place that an outside source would meaningfully augment that experience for the reader, it is welcome but not required. Please be sure to correctly quote or paraphrase and provide both in-text and works cited citations.Task & Format
• Write a rhetorical analysis essay in which you define how your media source uses ethos, pathos, and logos (plus kairos, if applicable).
• 3-5 Pages traditional MLA Format including correct typeface, font size, margins, header, works cited page (which at least cites the video you have analyzed but also includes any additional sources), and original title.Analysis Content
o Based on the creative nature of art objects, like the video you have selected for this assignment, there is a vast array of possible combinations of rhetoric that the individual creator may have employed. So, too, if every person in the class watched the same clip they may each have a slightly different interpretation or different elements may reveal themselves to the writer. Consider the following questions as a way of helping you investigate the piece which you have selected and begin to form your thesis statement regarding the content of the art object and your rhetoric examination goals.
What aesthetic elements exist within this piece which are worthy of your notice? Does the video emphasize line, shape, space, value, form, texture or color? If so, how? Does it, conversely, utilize elements of design like contrast, balance, emphasis, movement, white space, proportion, hierarchy, repetition, rhythm, pattern, unity or variety? Do not feel the need to answer each of these questions individually – some may appear and some may not. Select any that work well together to form your argument.
Are elements complementary or do they contrast? If so, how does that enhance the experience from a rhetorical standpoint?
Are there any styles or types associated with the brief film you have selected? Are there norms it must follow in the traditional sense of realism vs. classicism. Vs. formalism or mode such as documentary vs. fiction. vs experiental. How do you see this particularly short film fitting in to those norms and how does rhetoric enable that fit?
In order to explain your impression of the film, consider how well it utilizes formal techniques and thematic content. How do plot, themes and tone, acting and characters, direction, score, cinematography (mis-en-scene, lighting, diegetic and non-diegetic sound, and so on), production design, special effects or editing, pace, & even dialogue impact the rhetorical experience. How does the thematic content (such as history, race, gender, sexuality, class or the environment) affect your experience and integration?
Organization
• Introduction
o First, you should introduce the context for the media that you have selected. It is appropriate to share its title and creator as well as a brief summary of its content. Once you have given this background, then transition to a clear thesis statement in which you share an original argument regarding the rhetorical triangle and your chosen text. The thesis should be the single most sculpted sentence of your entire paper; think of it as a steering wheel – without it you can’t choose your direction for the rest of the essay. If you’re not sure how to address all elements of the intro, at least write the thesis first.
• Body
o Define how ethos, pathos, and logos are used by the media source and why it is effective or ineffective.
o Embrace nuances; look for small details which help to establish a particular element of the rhetorical triangle. It doesn’t have to be a major plot moment to have significance – it could be something tiny like a repeated color, a song growing in complexity, or an element emerging / disappearing at particular times. Be an astute observer! Watch your video more than once.
o We can’t read your mind so we won’t know what you mean unless you write them in your paper. An ideal body paragraph will make a specific observation from the media and then explain its significance fitting into the paragraph PIE structure. Remember, observations cannot stand for themselves – once you provide your in-text citation for the I(nformation) then make sure to E(xplain) its significance.
• Conclusion
o Briefly summarize the main points of your essay and answer the following questions in order to establish significance:
How is rhetoric used within this media?
Does any element emerge as having the most weight in the art object’s ultimate success, and if so what/why?
Are there any larger patterns or observations that we can make about the use of rhetoric in our world based on this microcosm?
Challenges
• Students often wish to identify a single element per paragraph giving examples of one particular component only to find that a given observation actually employs more than one leg of the triangle simultaneously. Do not marry your writing to the traditional five paragraph structure; it is a useful starting point (and ideal for timed writings) but will not serve you well when attempting to address nuances.
• This is not an opinion piece. While an argument is formed from your own opinion initially, you must move beyond the “I believe” to support it logically with evidence. Elements from the video brought forward in your discussion should contribute to this providing ample opportunity to convince your reader of your position.
• Limit your summary to the introduction paragraph; we are trained as K-12 students to perform excruciatingly detailed summaries (think of all those book reports you had to endure during the first two decades of your education). Our goal here is to move beyond summary and make a claim – that becomes more difficult in only three pages if you let your summary run away with the essay.
• Look for opportunities to be original. It’s tempting to look up the meaning of every color and see how it works a symbol. Our brains want to find a pattern that has only one meaning. Resist these urges! If you and a friend both watched this video, what interesting observation have you made that they will find engaging and meaningful? Keep it exciting and unique but accurate and supportable.
