The short story “volar” by Judith Cofer revolves around an immigrant family in America that have challenges fitting in the society. The existence of the little girl character in the story is the center of conflict. Her mother supports her dreams of wanting to fly and attaining a life full of freedom to an extent of having similar dream as hers. On the contrary, her father rejects it bringing conflict between her existence and two different attitudes towards ethnicity. The girl is fighting the dreams and life reality.
The theme of the desire to escape is presented by the character and the conflict from the perspective of internal conflict within the girl. She had a dream of becoming a super girl from her strong desires of wishing she could fly from her real self to a point of hoping to be in a place she could have liberty. However, there was a conflict between her dreams and how she temperamentally handled them. However much she wanted to escape, she still knew the reality and at no point was her dreams going to become true. She was internally trying to live in deception but the reality was always checking in when out of her dreams. She said,” In the mornings I’d wake up in my tiny bedroom with the incongruous…and find myself back in my body: my tight curls still clinging to my head, skinny arms and legs . . . unchanged” (Confer). This brought conflict between her internal desire to escape and reality.
