This has been a very interesting course for me.  While we have all learned about organizational structures, this was a much deeper dive into the theories involved with the reasoning for the structure.  I enjoyed reading about employees motivation for staying in a position and performing at higher levels based on how connected they feel.
Applying business processes in general to my work was intriguing.  Working at a school, we don’t ‘make’ things, but educate children  That education truly is our output and I appreciated the opportunity to understand the processes regardless of what the structure of company was.
Learning was another important area for me, as it is an area that I struggle in as a leader.  Understanding the motivation and barriers involved with the commitment to learning has already helped me in my professional life in finding new ways to motivate staff to learn new processes.  We use all the variable trainings discussed, with many of our mandatory trainings being online and provided by outside agencies. While this is an inexpensive and efficient way to get these trainings done, we are in discussions of how effective these trainings truly are.  For instance, as mandated reporters we have to watch an hour long training every year to help understand what is required of us.  However, there is nothing in the training of HOW to report if ever necessary.  We are working on site-specific small trainings to make it more task-related.
Having never worked in a large organization, the study of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) was amazing to me.  I’ve never thought of all the roads that need to intersect to make business happen.  Again, though I was introduced to it in my earlier schooling, looking at the theories involved in the decision making process has changed my overall perspective of it.

Two key identifiable concepts from the readings and assignments on this course that apply to my Doctoral Study Proposal (DSP) development are qualitative data analysis and literature review. However, a solid theoretical framework foundation is critical to start with for my DSP case study. I thought I knew what my DSP would be before this class; however, it seems I have gone through a brief action-research process. That has not been a bad thing, and I applaud those who know what DSP topic they will pursue.

While I am a novice at both qualitative data analysis and literature review and need to sharpen those skills, I feel I have been doing this throughout my career. I believe most DBA students have been doing this as well. As leaders in our professions, we analyze and review data all the time without even thinking. Module 5 introduced software (Dedoose) that I will use in the DBA program and analyze my business documents such as contracts, contractor’s proposals, and standard operating procedures (SOP). While some of this information is quantitative in nature, I can combine the data into a mixed output to brief and write my evaluations.

Throughout the course, ethical credibility has been linked to adequate recordkeeping of data to include literature. For me, this is an important concept, as simple as it might seem. I travel extensively for my job from location to location and from meeting to meeting. Yes, while COVID has reduced some of the travel, virtual conferences and walkthrough of projects have increased. Because of this, I listen to printed literature through multiple media applications throughout the day. I must document the literature I am listening to and dictate the sources of my ideas, even when traveling. I want to ensure I give credit where credit is due. I have decided to upload whatever literature I am reviewing into Dedoose, enabling me to code better after listening and reading it. That seems rational to me right now, and only applying this concept will show me if this practice is viable.
Respectfully,
Gene
