1. Summarize what you learned from the readings/lecture/other resources on this week’s topic. Include your reflections and opinions. Remember that you need to include material from the required resources and at least 1-2 of the optional resources (articles, videos, podcasts, etc)
2. Weekly activity: This week, you are going to compare your food production and acquisition to those we can reconstruct for hunter-gatherers and early agriculturalists with regards to storage, time, and variety.
a.Storage: Hunter-gatherers typically do not store any substantial proportion of food for later use; most foods are consumed within a few days from when they were acquired. With agriculture, this changed substantially, and prolific long-term food storage became a staple of agricultural societies. How much of your food has been stored for over a week from when it was acquired/produced (harvested, slaughtered, or collected) to when you consume it?
b. Time: One study (Dyble et al 2019) estimates that hunter-gatherers spend about 2-3 hours a day on food-related activities (not including eating the food or cleaning up afterwards) while for agricultural societies, it is closer to 4-5 hours a day. On one day, track how much time you spend on food-related ‘work,’ not including eating or cleaning up after a meal. How does it compare? Why do you think your time looks the way it does compared to these estimates?c.Variety: One of the other major shifts from hunter-gatherer subsistence to agricultural subsistence was a decrease in the different kinds of foods consumed; a hunter-gatherer may eat 75 different kinds of plants over the course of a year, while an early agriculturist relies on fewer than 10 different plant species. How many different plants do you notice in your daily diet? For packaged foods, look at the ingredients and see which plants (wheat, corn) appear in the first few listed items.
