You will need to reread this article several times so that you have an excellent understanding of the content. It is recommended that you print the article out and mark it up with highlighters and/or notes in the margins.

Formatting and Technical RequirementsThis extended summary should be double spaced and in an Arial font of twelve. Use left alignment (ragged) rather than full (justified).
Because the document is provided to you, avoid including in-text citations and a reference for this assignment.
Length – 300 to 500 words FIRM
Note: Because understanding scope is part of the assignment, you will be penalized the percentage you are over/under the word count. Stay within the allotted range.
Also, please be aware that it is very difficult to summarize this article in 300 words. If you word count is near 300, your sentences should contain a high vocabulary and a strong density of information.
Your summary should be formatted as a single paragraph, much like the example provided.

TipsYou should aim for a higher word count at first and narrow your summary down. It is possible to score a high grade with only 300 words, but it is rare. Remember that you should be including the important examples Young offers to support his points. What are the most important examples he offers? Which important moments in history does he cover? Which agencies and laws does he address?
Spend time carefully studying the example provided.
Avoid using direct quotations in your summary. This assignment is to practice summarization.
Look up each word that you do not understand in the article. If you do not understand a term that Young repeatedly uses, how can you summarize his points in your own words?
After you have read the article several times and placed notes/highlights throughout, create an outline of Young’s article similar to the example provided.
Talk to a friend, parent, or classmate about the article. Do you find the issues presented as disturbing as Young does? If you talk about the points Young offers, your overall understanding of the article will improve.
