For better or for worse: Child marriage in Saudi ArabiaFor Better or for Worse: Child marriage in Saudi ArabiaMarriage in the Saudi Arabia, as it is for many regions of the world, may not only be an expression of love and commitment, but also a way to cohere two families together, consolidating social ties and guarantee financial stability. In some cases, these more feasible incentives cause families to marry their daughters off prematurely, despite the physical and emotional repercussions of that pronouncement. Child marriage, consistently deciphered as an Islamic practice, is often an act of financial desperation, hastened by a lack of education and practical alternatives. Defined as a union in which one or both partners are under the age of 18, child marriage is a health and human rights issue, especially for women in the developing world. Although the definition of child marriage includes boys and girls, most children married under the age of 18 years are girls. Families are often unwilling to invest in the education of girls if this investment is not perceived as bringing them direct economic gains girls are valued only as wives and mothers. Child marriage is a development challenge that robs over 14 million girls globally every year of their future and holds them and their countries back from achieving their potential. There are different factors that drive to child marriage especially in Saudi Arabia. As mentioned in the introduction poverty, financial misery, and society & traditions leads to child marriage as highlighted in Gynecol (2009) poverty, the need to strengthen societal bonds and the acceptance so that it offers protection. He also stated that guardians have to guarantee their daughter’s financial well-being as well as to diminish the monetary encumbrance of the daughter’s position in the household. He also added that girls are engaged as exorbitant in terms of feeding, clothes and education and conclusively there was not any productivity from girls to the family after leaving the family. Usually, marriage causes a settlement to the bride’s family. It is perceived that the younger the girl is, the greater the payment. Consequently, sooner the economic affliction of nurturing the girl is eliminated. irrevocably, parents feel gratified in the society by marrying their daughter to a “noble” family in positions of social prestige. There was a conjoint certainty between the parents that marrying the daughter’s young would safeguard them from rape, premarital sexual interest, inadvertent pregnancies, and sexually transferred infections, specifically human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and AIDS (as cited in Nour, 2009).Child marriage does not only distress the girls individually but also drives their life to lowest of the pit. There are numerous different things they can relish by living a nourishing, thriving and satisfying life where they can approach into anything they want to be involved in. Rather than living such a life, they expose their welfare by getting married prematurely which can exile most important phases of their life such as their education, health, security, rights, and economy. Firstly, Girls with no education are 3 times more likely to get married below the age of 18 than who encompasses secondary or higher education. When linking them with the girls with no education, secondary school girls are 6 times less likely to marry as children. Girls who get married prematurely tend to stop their education to arrange themselves for the domiciliary life and its responsibilities. They require time for this kind of arrangement which results to them taking this calamitous substitution. Subsequently after discontinuing their education, they become more susceptible to marriage and primary pregnancy. This undoubtedly limits their capabilities into developing their skills and knowledge to result into a happy life. In the absence of these proficiencies and information, they are practically empty handed because they are incapable of making any deliberate choice in life due to the absence of knowledge. Secondly, girl’s security is being endangered as a result of child marriage. In some regions where there are greater threats of sexual abuse and physical violence, many parents decide to marry off their daughters prematurely to certify their protection in the future. This kind of circumstances that occur in some countries may force some parents to make this kind of hard choice. But in other regions where this kind of situation doesn’t commonly occur parents still may consider that early marriage can be a shielding choice for their daughters but the reality is that most early marriages with children involved ends with violence or even murder. Thirdly, the healthiness of a married young child will drop. Health the most significant feature that need to be taken care of, but in premature marriages girls usually face demoralizing health effects. Prior sexual activity and pregnancy injures the physical health of a young girl. At this early age, girl’s bodies are still evolving in which they don’t
have any knowledge about their sexual and reproductive health. This can result to innumerable forms of health complications to them for example imbalanced hormone changes, HIV/ AIDS, diseases that is related to genital organs and more (Hampton, 2010). In addition, they are also more vulnerable to higher rates of maternal death throughout giving birth. They are neither physically nor emotionally ready to give births which results into them to facing higher risk of mortality during childbirth. Typically, the victims are young women among the age range of 15 to 18 because it is considered to be a difficult and convoluted procedure for them to give birth in such young age.Child marriage performs a fundamental position in broadcasting poverty and the disadvantages throughout generations. The association concerning education on one side, and the significance of women and the safety of their children on the other, is commonly known. Child marriage disrupts that link. Girls incoming premature marriage usually get pregnant at an earlier age get slower interludes of pregnancy. aside from the undeviating dangers to the girls involved, the youngsters of undeveloped, unqualified mothers can also result into them being less probable to achieve advanced levels of education, prolonging the series of poverty. Likewise, the poverty that is actually one of the biggest motives for child marriage propagates by conveying moderated life-chances for kids. Stripped from their youthfulness and innocence, deceived of their rights to get proper education, and pregnable to serious health hazards, these children – the massive mainstream of them are young girls – are obligated into a world of repressed opportunities from which they have diminutive faith of getting away. For those most directly pretentious – the youngsters themselves – premature marriage is a considered to be a one-way ticket to a lifespan of poverty, ignorance, and enslavement.Child marriage is considered to be a very horrendous act and innocent young children are the victims. There are many different factors that result into child marriage and its consequences especially in Saudi Arabia such as using it as a way to cohere two families together, or a way to consolidate social ties and also guarantee financial stability. Girls are not brides. Girls are supposed to live their life with joy and ecstasy and we have no right to take that innocence away from them and throw them into this miserable reality.Work cited:Nour, Nawal M. “Child Marriage: a Silent Health and Human Rights Issue.” Reviews in Obstetrics & Gynecology, MedReviews, LLC, 2009, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2672998/.The Causes, Consequences and Solutions to Forced Child … icrw.org/files/images/Causes-Consequences-and Solutions-to-Forced-Child-Marriage-Anju-Malhotra-7-15-2010.pdf.Hampton T (2010), “Child Marriage Threatens Girls’ Health”, JAMA, Vol. 304,No. 5, pp. 509-510.Nnadi, I.
