Yesterday, our society inaugurated a new executive, President of the United States of America (POTUS). In spite of the insurrection (of the U. S. Capitol) on January 6, 2021, it was a peaceful transfer of power, from one American president to another. Former Vice President (Obama Administration) and U.S. Senator Joseph Biden defeated Donald Trump in the November 3, 2020 General Election. Mr. Trump was the 45th president and Mr. Biden is the 46th president.A peaceful transfer of power is a defining characteristic of a democracy. The insurrection almost succeeded and may have been encouraged by former President Trump. Many people participating in the insurrection wanted Mr. Trump to remain president. In chapter one, we learned that there are many forms of government. A society can change its type/form of government. Most have. Today approximately 50% of world nations have some type of democratic government. Far less have what political scientists referred to as full democracies.
