In 1989, Francis Fukuyama declared that, with the collapse of the USSR and growing unrest in China, there remained no ideological rivals to Western-style liberal democracy and that all human civilizations would soon be living in an “end of history,” in which liberal democracy would eventually overtake all other forms of governance.
In the 30 years since Fukuyama published his work, Socialism has grown in popularity in many Western nations, while Illiberal democracies and Authoritarianism have flourished both at home and abroad.
