POST 1 There is often a distinction between leadership and management. Management involves using power to contain and instruct employees (Toor, 2011). On the other hand, leadership entails motivating, influencing, and inspiring employees (Toor, 2011). Therefore, senior leaders will encourage employees to depict a positive response to change when it comes to change. At the same time, managers will use the power bestowed upon them to make employees accept change.
Senior leaders will inspire employees by showing them the positive side of change. They can do this by holding meetings to explain why the change is necessary and how they would benefit from the change. They will then give employees the autonomy to voice their opinions regarding the change. After listening to employees’ opinions, they will arrive at a consensus with employees on what change will constitute. In the long-run, leaders will either negatively or positively influence employees to respond to change.
Senior managers will use power and control to implement change. For instance, they will design policies that define the conduct of employees when responding to change. They will also use their subordinates, such as departmental managers, to control and contain employees who resist change. However, senior managers may use support systems and employee training to enable employees to adapt to change. The senior managers will be looking at how employees may feel comfortable and maintain their productivity after the change. Employee support systems will address issues, such as mental and psychological issues brought about by change. Employee training will provide employees with the additional skills needed to adapt to change.
There will be few issues under leadership because a leader gives employees the freedom to voice their change concerns. Under management, many problems may arise, such as employees feeling compelled to respond to change.
