According to Greenleaf, one of a servant leader’s characteristics is that they are aware and “receptive to their physical, social and political environments,” allowing them to appropriately assess and implement their perspectives (Northouse, 2019, p. 229). The Christian leader can also operate successfully on the global scale through using “ambition” in “the service of God” (Sanders, 2017, p. 12). A successful leader may or may not be a Christian, but the difference in leadership approach is rooted in the leaders’ worldview. The Christian leader should be motivated to achieve based on a desire to further the kingdom of God. In contrast, the secularist (who is often still a successful leader) will lead and perform in favor of self-service (Sanders, 2017).
Additionally, Miller & Guthrie (2018) explain that secularist and animistic leaders are concerned with emotion, materialism, and the mystic, which are unwittingly rooted in the giving up of intellectual thought (p. 48).
