Much of what we know about revision comes from studies of cognition and writing, in which researchers investigated the thinking processes of individual writers when composing and planning revisions.
Other studies, advocating a “knowledge-building approach,” have revealed the importance of reflection by asking students to be conscious about their process and deliberate in their decision-making. When we combine these two perspectives, we see that it is key for learners to make revision visible and explicit.
The work of Linda Flower, for instance, provides us with three revision moves:Detect – the ability to recognize that something is wrong or short of where a writer needs to be with regard to goals or purpose (giving and receiving feedback helps improve our ability to detect).
Diagnose – the ability to recognize what, precisely, is wrong or short of where a writer needs to be with regard to goals or purpose.
Strategize – the ability to name how to fix problems or meet goals. These three moves should be seen as a recursive cycle. This cycle leads to what is sometimes known as “deep revision.”
