Title: The Progression of Music in Poor African-American Communities
Number of sources: 3
Paper instructions:
AP / ECE
Mr. Nelken
Community Networking project resources
Goal:
The primary purpose of this assignment is to build research evidence for your upcoming paper.
Your writing will be best when it is filled with personal relevance and investment. Talking to the
friends and family members in your life about your paper topic will encourage this result as you
will learn more about how your argument lives in the daily life of your immediate communities
(informs ethos and pathos). Much of argument writing is based on expert voices and data from
internet sources which are valuable for showing the broader impact of your argument (informs
logos). But to improve engagement with the reader of your argument, you will also want to make
your writing personal and intimate with the real-life voices of the people who are most involved
in our lives.
Task: In-depth interviews – select 1-3 subjects to have a long talk with while you record their
responses. Consider opening the interview by sharing sources you studied on your topic
to offer your subject some background content. Ask follow-up questions to get into more
complexity with your topic. Remember – opposing views are valuable to, don’t force
your subject to agree with you. Quick survey of a pool of 25 or more subjects – use social media or handouts to connect
with multiple subjects for quick data collection. You may want to provide some
background information or you may want “cold” responses that are not biased by your
sources. Be sure to have an understanding of the overall demographics of your subjects as
specific names are less likely to be used – your reader will still want to know some
general information about your subjects for context (ex. “middle-class teen art student”) Hybrid – feel free to blend these two research styles to get the most out of your research
Subject identification – if you are talking about very personal topics you may get more
out of your questioning by offering anonymity to your subject. This is acceptable as long
as you have some general demographics for your subject to offer your reader some
context for their perspective. If you are going to use your subject’s name it is still helpful
to have some of these contextual demographics with the name as well (ex. “Sally Jones,
mother and school teacher in urban environment”) Disclaimer – “what if I complete my community networking research but then decide to
change my paper topic?!” That’s OK. You still learned the skills and can try to repeat the
process again more quickly to add this kind of evidence into your paper.

highlight key quotes or data that you find most useful to your study, discuss results that
were unexpected or unusual and discuss their incomplete relevance
5. Reflection – look back at your design and hypothesis and discuss what went right, what
went wrong, and how you would improve this work if repeated, propose how you expect
this research will be used in your paperModel surveys: from different students only
