Question 1
What I found interesting is learning how homosexuality came to be as a form of identity of some people in the current world. All along I thought it is something that used to exist but the society did not give them a chance to speak for themselves. On the contrary, D’Elmilio says capitalism is the cause of people using homosexuality as a form of identity. Before 19th century, family was an interdependent unit of production and the survival for each member depended on corporation between men, women and children (D’Elmilio 469). However, capitalism brought new system of living where people could sell labor for money giving them new means of survival. D’Elmilio says, “As wage spread and production became socialized, it became possible to release sexuality from the imperative to procreate” (470). It became a source of happiness, a means to express intimacy and most importantly sexual identity. Participation in nuclear family gave people means of survival but with capitalism system of free labor people were able to survive outside family constructing, and live personal life based on attraction to one sex (D’Elmilio 470).
Question 2
What I did not understand is the “eternal homosexuality” myth behind gays and lesbians. D’Elmilio says it meant gay and lesbians always existed throughout history and will still be (468), but before 19th century they never existed. How was this ideology used in the 1970 gay liberation movement without facts?
Question3
What I would want to know more is the theory behind homosexuality current identity. As explained by D’Elmilio before 19th century homosexual people were said to have psychological problems according to doctors back then, but in the current world it is described as a person’s nature (471). What I would want to know more is that, how were homosexuals able to survive before capitalism era in a family setting considering this was their nature? D’Elmilio says no one was allowed to live outside a family and marriage was the only means of sexual expression meant to produce offspring necessary for survival due to the interdependent that existed back then (469). I would like to know more on how homosexuals were feeling back then. Does that mean they did not have the sexual desires for their opposite sex partners? How did they procreate in regard to the new theory being homosexual is nature?
Question 4
From the reading what I can connect with the experience with the world today is birth rate. In ancient times people used to have a lot of children especially our great grandparents. After this reading, I have come to understand why having many children mattered that time. Moreover, it is true capitalism has given people new means of survival whereby some do not even need children to survive because there is no more interdependence and I believe that is why heterosexual people can assert that being gay and lesbian is nature and their identity because they can survive on their own. Without capitalism I think it could have been hard for them to survive on their own and consider it nature.
Question 5
This reading connects to The Invention of Heterosexuality explanation on what sexuality was before 19th century. In this reading, before 19th century, “true love was only realized through the mode of proper procreation, marriage and the legal organization for producing a new set of correctly gendered women and men” (Katz 232). People were identified as manly men and women responsible for procreation not as erotic beings, but transformation of family from producer to consumer brought the ideas of identity bringing homosexuality (Katz 233). Therefore, according to D, Elmilio and Katz, before 19th century women and men were known for producing offspring and the issue of people being homosexuals never existed. The reading also connects with last week’s reading on the sense that, the rise of capitalism world brought the new understanding of self, that is from homosexuality perspective and personal identity from general point of view. Rousseau (91), says the traditional European cultural terrain shift was witnessed through the emergence of capitalism, individualism and new empirical science which made people understand the world from different point of view. For instance, having mental problems was not a possession by demons rather a disease. Therefore, in both readings the emergence of modern way of life made people understand themselves from different perspectives.
