What I would like to know more is why do some people succeed through education

What I found interesting in this reading is finding out the amount of damage that a careless education system can cause in people’s life especially when in their stages of growth. In Hardened Selves: The Remaking of the American Working Class Silvia gives several testimonies of people who felt betrayed by the education system that did not pay attention to their childhood problems, thus, affecting their adulthood life as well as making them have negative attitude towards education. Amber gives a testimony of how her teachers ignorance made them fail to realize she had ADHD disability when she was young (Silvia 87). This in turn made her not make it to college, become medicated and finally become a cook which hurts her since she feels she could have been different. Vanessa on the other hand felt misunderstood by the administration because of her behavior of taking things that did not belong to her yet she was just a kid who did not understand it was bad (Silvia 88). They finally sent her to see a psychiatrist just because they thought she can harm people with a knife that she brought to school because she had issue with her pencil (Silvia 89). This shows how education has damaged most people emotionally as well as their life with the system’s ignorant behavior.
Question 2
What I did not understand is the “mismeasure of Social Contract” in chapter 4. The testimonies given by people that Silvia interviewed are more on the disrespect and lack of appreciation at work place. This is from Rebecca, Craig and Racheal feeling they are giving more than they were getting back to Bill and Jillian working in a company that did not care about their effort and hard work to keep it running (86). What I did not understand is why Silvia termed this as social contract and why she said it is mismeasured.

What I would like to know more is why do some people succeed through education because most of the testimonies are negative about the system of education? What do they do different? Or is it just luck?

What I can connect with this reading and what I have witnessed in the world is people working in places that are totally different from their line of studies. I have seen engineers work in supermarkets, teachers in food stores and nurses in children day-care institutions. After this reading I have come to realize what people study in school does not always guarantee them employment on their field of expertise, rather things can change and they have to survive.

This reading relates with the previous chapter reading on the issue of lack of people’s trust on the education system. In The endless cycle of Betrayal in chapter 4, Jay gives a testimony of how he feels cheated by the education system. He says he always felt like he was a straight A student according to what the society made him feel and at a young age he was made to understand through education he can have anything that he wants in life (90). On the contrary, life took a different path despite getting educated such that after graduation he has only worked in food service and coffee shops. In the previous reading, Silvia gives a testimony of Brandon who felt a mixture of bitterness and regret because college education was his start of long series of disappointments (3). He was also made to believe that education is Key to success but unfortunately even after earning the degree he ended up not getting a decent job but working in clothing chain. He feels like he was sold fake goods.
